NUCLEAR RADIOACTIVE CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL RISKS

"The CBRN threat should be considered as a potential threat [...], which exists, even if one does not have to fall into psychosis. »Gilles Ahuir - National Gendarmerie

The threat context facing France and the toxic synthesis capacities developed locally in Iraq and Syria, by some terrorist organizations, have increased the fear of the terrorist threat on the territory. So far, and fortunately, the report "cost-effectiveness" of terrorist attacks has ruled out CBRN attacks (Nuclear, Radiological, Biological, Chemical) on French soil. If Gilles Ahuir, the NRBC "enjoys an exceptional media resonance box" and "remains very attractive to terrorist organizations", the implementation of weapons of this type is still difficult.

Thus, on the nuclear and radiological agents, the first components of the NRBC risk, the creation of an EDEN (nuclear release device) remains a delicate undertaking, particularly with regard to the quantities of fossil materials to be used (uranium, plutonium), and specificities related to the design and detonation of the machine. However, the association of radioactive material with explosive (artisanal, military or industrial) and the dissemination of material that would result, would cause a major psychological impact and require a high level of decontamination. As for the sources of conventional radioactive material, the losses and thefts, regularly recorded each year [1], show that they remain quite easily available.
